Hit or Miss Fresh Fish

We got to know Bo Iwase in January of this year, when he captained an offshore charter for a small group of us. Bo does not typically offer charters, so it was a special occasion to be invited on the water with a commercial fisherman like him.

The charter was an all-day affair, heading over to Ni‘ihau from Port Allen, and back. We saw a decent amount of action during the day and landed a variety of fish, including Wahoo (a.k.a., Ono), gray snapper, skipjack, and a big haul of small yellowfins right at the end.

By the time we got back to the dock at Port Allen, the stars were bright in the sky. We decided to call it a night, agreeing to meet at Bo’s house in Lawai the next morning. We would divide the catch then.

The next morning, we headed over to Bo’s house at 3915 Koloa Rd Koloa HI 96756. You can’t miss his place. If you’re heading north/northwest on Koloa Road (Rte 530), it will be on the right side. It’s the one with the big white fishing boat parked out front.

Bo’s sign will be out if he has fish for sale. Late morning is the best time to try. If you don’t see the sign, don’t bother stopping. That’s just the way it works: hit or miss.

When we divvied up the fish, we got our fair share. It could not have been much fresher. We feasted on fish for days.
